    A short queue, spun that morning. Each one tells you why you are seeing them — a shared answer, a Gathering you both RSVPed to, the same good hours. Read them and pass on the ones that are not for you.

  2. Two

    Reply to something specific

    There are no bare likes. To start a thread you pick a prompt answer or a photo and say something about it, so the first message is already about a person rather than a face.

  3. Three

    Threads do not expire

    Nothing disappears in 24 hours and nothing nudges you to respond. The list fills slowly on purpose. Then, mostly, you go and meet at a Gathering.

Why it's built this way

An app that wants you to stop using it.

Every dating app you have used makes money from the time you spend inside it. That is not a conspiracy, it is just what the business model rewards. Infinite queues, unread-message badges, a nudge when you were about to close the tab.

Skein makes money two ways: a $5.99 subscription that buys comfort and self-expression, and tickets to Gatherings — real events, in one city, that you have to physically attend. Both of those get better when you meet someone and leave.

So the app is built to run out. Five people a day, then it closes for you until tomorrow.

The point is the room, not the app.

Small, cheap, local events you can go to without a match, a date, or a plan. Two hours, a real venue, and a door you can walk back out of.

Skein opens one city at a time, so the people in it are actually near each other. Tampa is first. Say where you are and we will open your city when enough people are waiting.

We store a one-way hash of your address, never the address itself, plus the city and the date. That is enough to count you and to email you when your city opens, and not enough to be worth stealing.

The ones people actually ask.

Why only five people a day?

Because a longer queue makes you skim. Five is enough to read properly, reply to something specific, and still have an opinion about all of them by the end. When they run out, the app closes for you until the next morning.

What if I do not like any of the five?

Pass on all five and nothing happens. Nobody is told, nobody is penalised, and the next set arrives at 8am. Passing is not a cost to you.

Can I pay to be seen by more people?

No. That is the one thing Skein+ will never sell, and it is the reason the price is low and fixed. Every profile in a given skein got there the same way.

How does verification work?

A short liveness capture at signup confirms a real person is holding the phone. The video is deleted within 60 seconds, no face scan is stored, and it is never shown to other users. We do not ask for gender at that step.

Do I have to go to a Gathering?

No. The app works entirely without them. They exist because meeting people in a room is easier than meeting them in a thread, and because ticket revenue means we do not need your attention.

Why those two cities?

They are where the team can support launch. A dating app is only as good as how full it is, so we would rather be genuinely useful in Tampa Bay and Tuscaloosa than technically available everywhere.

Is Skein only for queer people?

It is queer-built and queer-first, with gender and orientation fields that are not an afterthought. Anyone 18 or over in an open city can join.
